In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada on September 30, 2024, WT’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee has invited our firm members across our three offices to participate in two virtual lunch-and-learn webinars organized by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. This event will provide our members with the opportunity to learn, listen, and discover how to take action toward reconciliation. The discussion will explore Canada’s endorsement of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, as well as the barriers to reconciliation and how to address them. We will discuss the significance of this milestone and its potential to reshape the Crown-Indigenous relationship. The webinars will be held on September 26 at 10 a.m. PST and on September 27 at 10 a.m. PST. Whitelaw Twining will also be donating $1500.00 to the Indigenous Bar Association Student Scholarship Foundation.
The IBA Law Student Scholarship Foundation was established in July 2003 as an independent charitable non-profit corporation. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote the advancement of Indigenous legal education by providing scholarships to Indigenous students attending post-secondary law programs. The scholarships are awarded to successful student candidates who are in need of financial assistance, who have achieved well academically and have contributed to their communities.
Objectives of the Scholarship Foundation:
- To promote the advancement of education by providing scholarships to Aboriginal students attending post-secondary law programs.
- To solicit and receive donations as a charitable organization to establish and expand our abilities to award grants and scholarships to further the academic aspirations of Aboriginal students to pursue a legal career.
- To do such other things as are necessary to further the above-mentioned objectives.
Additionally, our offices will be closed on Monday, September 30, 2024, in observance of Truth and Reconciliation Day. This day serves as an important opportunity for us to reflect on its history and impact and to honor the experiences of Indigenous peoples.
